Shocking statistics reveal that Cristiano Ronaldo was officially the least effective striker at Euro 2024. The 39-year-old Portugal captain started all five of his team’s games in Germany but failed to score a single goal. His disappointing campaign included a missed penalty that left him in tears, along with several wasted opportunities before Portugal were ultimately knocked out by France in the quarter-finals.
Ronaldo’s poor performance continued while Liverpool star Diogo Jota and Paris Saint-Germain striker Gonçalo Ramos remained on the bench. And now, the extent of his inefficiency has been highlighted by statistics showing he was the biggest underachiever in terms of his expected goals (xG). Ronaldo’s xG was 3.52, meaning he was expected to score between three and four goals based on the chances he had. Instead, the man who scored 130 goals in 212 games for Portugal failed to find the net at the Euros.
That is the biggest disparity of any striker in the tournament, with Germany’s Kai Havertz (3.11) the only other striker to under-score more than three goals. Romelu Lukaku, from Belgium (2.29), Kylian Mbappé, from France (2.02), and Memphis Depay, from the Netherlands (2.00), also had difficulties in front of goal, completing the top five. Also on the list are Serbian Aleksandar Mitrović (1.82) and Frenchman Antoine Griezmann (1.71).
Surprisingly, eighth place belongs to Euro winner and Spanish superstar Lamine Yamal – who won the Young Player of the Tournament award at just 17 years old. His brilliant performances resulted in just one goal, although it was a great goal in the 2-1 semi-final victory over France. Rasmus Højlund, from Denmark (1.45), and Ante Budimir, from Croatia (1.43), complete the top 10. In response to these statistics, Ronaldo broke his silence, commenting on a UEFA post that released the numbers: “The statistics do not tell the whole story.
